FAQ

Common questions about how Oritone works and what to expect from treatment

What is Oritone?

Oritone is a personalised tinnitus therapy delivered through accredited audiologists. It uses customised sound — generated from your unique hearing and tinnitus profile — to help the brain reduce its response to the tinnitus signal over time. It is not a masking product or a generic sound generator. Over time, your perception of the ringing diminishes as your auditory system adapts.

Is Oritone safe?

Yes. The therapy uses sound delivered at comfortable listening levels — typically softer than comparable uncustomised stimulation. It is non-invasive, drug-free and designed for daily use. Your audiologist will ensure the prescription is appropriate for your profile before treatment begins.

How is Oritone different from other tinnitus treatments?

Most sound-based approaches use generic audio designed to distract from tinnitus. Oritone is different. Your therapy is built specifically from your audiological data — your hearing thresholds, tinnitus pitch, loudness, and sound tolerance levels. The goal isn't to cover up tinnitus. It's to help your brain pay less attention to it, durably, over time.

What equipment do I need?

The therapy is delivered through AirPods 3, AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 2, or AirPods Pro 3, paired with a smartphone or tablet. The AirPods use ear-scanning technology to calibrate the sound to your individual ear canal — an important part of what makes the delivery precise. Your audiologist will confirm compatibility at your initial appointment.

How long until I see results?

Most users notice improvement within the first few weeks of consistent use. Clinical data shows significant perception reduction within two to three months. Results vary based on individual factors and adherence to the therapy.

Who developed Oritone?

Oritone was developed by Dr Paul Davis, a tinnitus researcher and audiologist with more than 30 years of experience. Dr Davis is also the inventor of the Neuromonics Tinnitus Treatment, which has helped tens of thousands of people worldwide. Oritone represents his next-generation refinement of that work.

How does the therapy actually work?

Oritone uses your full audiological profile to generate a highly customised broadband sound therapy. The sounds — based on ocean wave recordings, processed through a 42-step algorithm — are calibrated to your specific hearing and tinnitus characteristics. Listening daily encourages your auditory system to become less reactive to the tinnitus signal over time.

Is this a cure for tinnitus?

No. Oritone is not a cure. It is a therapy designed to significantly reduce how often you notice tinnitus, how much it disturbs you, and how much it affects your daily life. Many patients experience substantial improvements, but individual results vary.

What does the treatment program look like?

The full program runs over approximately 12 months. In the early months, you'll listen for two or more hours per day — ideally during times when your tinnitus is most noticeable, including before sleep. Your audiologist will review your progress at key intervals and your prescription will be updated as your hearing and tinnitus profile changes. Towards the end of the program, listening time reduces significantly, to a maintenance level of around one to two hours per week.

Am I a suitable candidate?

Oritone is designed for people with moderate to severe tinnitus — particularly those whose symptoms affect sleep, concentration, relaxation, or quality of life. Around 73% of patients in private audiology practice are considered suitable. Your audiologist will assess you before treatment begins. People with certain conditions — such as significant hearing loss, highly fluctuating thresholds, or complex medical factors — may need to be assessed carefully or referred elsewhere.

How do I access Oritone?

Oritone is currently available through accredited audiologists around Australia. You'll need to see a trained Oritone audiologist, who will assess your candidacy, conduct the required tinnitus and hearing tests, and oversee your treatment program.

What tests do I need before starting?

Your audiologist will conduct a full audiological assessment, including hearing thresholds across a wide frequency range, tinnitus pitch and loudness matching, minimum masking levels, and loudness discomfort levels. This data is used to build your personalised sound prescription.

How long before I notice results?

Many patients notice meaningful improvements within four months. Clinical data shows that on average, patients move from a severe tinnitus impact score to a very mild range within that period. Results do vary between individuals.

What does the sound therapy sound like?

The therapy is based on layered ocean wave recordings, transformed and calibrated to your hearing profile. Patients commonly describe the sounds as softer, clearer, and immersive — comfortable enough to use for extended daily sessions.

Will I need to keep using it indefinitely?

Not at the original daily intensity. After the active treatment phase, most patients transition to a maintenance schedule of around one to two hours per week to preserve the benefits they've gained.

Can I stop treatment anytime?

Yes. You can pause or adjust your therapy at any time through the app. Many users continue treatment even after reaching their goals to maintain the improvement they've achieved. Your audiologist can advise on the best approach for your situation.

What does the clinical evidence show?

Across a cohort of patients using the latest treatment algorithms, average Tinnitus Functional Index (TFI) scores dropped from the severe range (62) to very mild (29.6) within four months. More than 80% of patients reported a 40% or greater reduction in tinnitus awareness and disturbance by that point. Objective audiometric measures — including sound tolerance and tinnitus loudness — showed consistent, statistically significant improvements. These outcomes have been replicated across independent clinics.

Has Oritone been independently validated?

Clinical outcomes have been replicated across multiple independent audiology clinics, with results that matched or exceeded those from the inventor's own clinic. Larger peer-reviewed and randomised controlled trials are planned. Current evidence is based on a longitudinal clinical cohort study.
